Independent means that the ICPT is not affiliated with any religious, academic, or educational institution and that it is non-sectarian and not beholden to any philosophical or religious school, ideology, or doctrine.
The Center offers a congenial and compelling ambiance in which people of all walks of life are invited to reflect on and think through the puzzles and mazes of life philosophically. Steering clear of both the formal strictures governing the university system and the manifold pressures governing professional life, the ICPT is an independent space and place for philosophical thinking and dialogue, welcoming those, in particular, who miss the vivid and rigorous discussions of their student days, as well as those who would like to engage in philosophy but have not had sufficient opportunity to do so.
What distinguishes Philosophical Thinking from other kinds of thinking is its fundamental concern with questions which inexorably arise at the very center of the labyrinth of human existence, which do not allow for definite answers, which make you want to pursue them despite the absence of definite answers, and whose very pursuit greatly enriches your life.
